Choice is supposed to be a good thing but it can make life more complicated! Whereas in years gone by, university was unattainable for the vast majority, it is now is a genuine choice for nearly a million young people each year.

The numbers of people entering university in Britain has been increasing for half a century or more. Now very nearly half of the eligible population go on to Higher Education compared to just 6% in the 1960’s.

The rapid rise in the numbers going to university has put a strain on the financial resources of both HM Government and the universities. To help alleviate this, the Government now allows universities in England, Wales and Northern Ireland to charge tuition fees of up to £3,145 (2008 figure) for full time undergraduates. At the same time they have introduced a loan system to cover the cost of the tuition fees and living expenses of students.
