Homepage » For Parents » Is University a Financial Investment? Getting through University is expensive, especially for those from middle-income families who receive no additional support. The Government tells us that graduate salaries are considerably higher than salaries of non-graduates in similar jobs and on this evidence they conclude that a university degree is a good investment. Many would argue that this is an over simplification and that for many graduates it’s not at all clear whether their degree represents a financial investment or not. The point is, that the value of a degree in the jobs market varies massively from University to University and from course to course. No one would argue about Conclusion My own opinion is that if think your son or daughter will enjoy the experience of university than it’s probably, for most, a good thing. University is a safe environment for young people to grow into adults and learn many valuable lessons about life. And it’s a fun. If University is considered only as a stepping-stone to improve career prospects and earnings I would be more cautious. I am unconvinced that degrees across the board offer the kind of financial investment that bland Government statistics suggest. |
the high value of an Oxbridge degree in, say law but in recent years all sorts of new courses have sprung-up with uncertain pedigrees. Whether many of these courses offer a financial benefit to the graduate is questionable.
