Halls of Residence...

Most students spend their first year in halls of residence, which is an ideal introduction to university life. Halls are generally reserved for first year students where making friends really is easy.

An application for halls should be done as soon as possible after a university place is confirmed. There may be a choice of full board or self-catering and there may also be other options such as en-suite bathrooms. Anecdotal evidence from sons and their friends suggest meals are not necessarily great value (but we stress this not exactly a scientifically conducted survey!).

The more popular choices are likely to be snapped up quickly so we recommend that you should encourage your offspring to complete their application for accommodation as a first priority.

A University hall of residence is generally a safe, friendly (but sometimes noisy!) environment on campus or close by. Once a place is confirmed the next thing is to consider what your son or daughter will need to take with take with them, to convert their box into a home. To give you a starting point we have compiled a student essentials guide, which I hope you will find useful.

What one person takes as an essential another will deem a luxury so you will have to humour us on some of our choices! Beware that rooms in halls tend to be fairly small so take care with the packing.
